Blackout Pass
Oliver was relieved when Hector let everyone have a short break. Larkin sat on his own, looking sullied.
"Well I enjoyed it," Rogan mumbled to Oliver as he watched Larkin.
"What? The abseil or watching Larkin almost kill himself?" Oliver asked, anger seeping into his words.
"What's up with you?" Rogan asked with a frown.
Oliver shook his head.
"Poor Larkin," Anna said, looking over at him.
"He's always hated heights," Quinn said.
"I bet he'll hate them even more now," Rogan said, eyeing Oliver for a laugh but he couldn't muster it.
"What happened up there?" May asked, narrowing her eyes at Oliver.
Oliver sighed and decided to tell them the truth. "Larkin said his mother bribed him to throw that rock at the hogtrout back in the race."
"He took a bribe? That's typical Larkin," Quinn said, rolling her eyes.
"But why the hell would his mum ask him to do that?" Oliver snapped.
Larkin glanced their way and they averted their gazes, but Oliver could tell he knew they were discussing him.
"I mean, I know it doesn't excuse what he did, but at least he had a reason," Anna said in a hushed voice.
Anger invaded Oliver at her words and he fought back a retort.
"Delphine wanted us out of the race," May guessed.
"Yeah, that makes sense. If she thought we were that much of a threat," Rogan said.
"She supports Rimori," Oliver said. "She told me and May."
May nodded her agreement.
"Are you sure?" Quinn asked disbelievingly.
"She does. She reckoned our mum went to join him," Oliver said.
"Larkin's never said anything like that before," Quinn said.
"Well he wouldn't exactly go around chanting it," Rogan said.
Quinn rolled her eyes. "Oh come on, Larkin might be a lot of things but he's not a supporter of Isaac Rimori. You're only saying that because you've never been keen on him."
"What? That's not true," Rogan argued.
"Oh come on, you hated that I was friends with him at uni. You only decided to actually make an effort with him for my sake."
"That's crap. If it wasn't for the fact that he was only friends with you because he fancied your arse off, I would have got along with him from the start." Rogan folded his arms.
Quinn pouted.
"Either way, he tried to get us killed," Rogan said and Oliver nodded in agreement.
"Don't be ridiculous. He's not a murderer, he's just an idiot," Quinn said.
Hector stepped in before anyone else could respond. "Move you lot. We've sat around long enough." He adjusted the pack on his back and put out his cigarette in the snow with a hiss.
"I only brought a couple of torches. We can have one at the front and one at the back," Havid said, retrieving two wooden torches from his pack. He soaked rags with oil and attached them to one end.
"Why don't we just light the way with magic?" Rogan suggested.
Chip's eyes lit up excitedly. "Yeah. Do that."
Hector frowned and looked like he was going to refuse when Marley spoke up. "That's not a bad idea, Hector. We can save the torches."
Hector looked to the man and Marley tilted his chin up at him.
